Many people who are in need of a wheelchair can struggle to stay warm and dry when out and about. A coat only covers the top half your body, leaving legs exposed to the elements. Wet trousers are a horrible feeling and can lead to more serious health conditions for older people.

Huggerug – The Big Rug and a Small Hug

Welcome to a revolutionary wheelchair blanket known affectionately as the Huggerug, the ‘Big Rug and a Small Hug’. Assisted Living Clothing is a family run, Devon based company, designing and selling clothing and wheelchair blankets for people with limited mobility. Two years ago Ann Lomas, co-founder and designer, was frustrated at the lack of options available to help keep her wheelchair bound sister in law warm in her wheelchair. Ann used her 20+ years of care experience (and dogged determination) to design what became known as the Huggerug.

Cleverly designed, the Huggerug is made from a warm and cosy fleece which secures behind the ankles and back with poppers. This means that the Huggerug stays safely away from getting caught in the wheels and also keeps the individual warm by tucking around the lower legs and back.  It also means that the individual can stay seated whilst the Huggerug is being put in place. 

Two years on and numerous colours and waterproof versions later, the Huggerugs are sold around the world. Ann said:

“When we started this journey it was my mission to help my sister in law stay warm. I never envisaged that it would become so successful. I’m thrilled that we can help so many people around the world stay warm and dry”.
