September 13 - Dementia Awareness Day 2013

Norman McNamara (Norrms) tells Ostrich more about Dementia Awareness Day, which will take place this year on 21st September 2013.

Origins of the Dementia Awareness Day

We first came up with the idea of holding a Dementia Awareness Day, or DAD day as we love to call it, back in 2011 and it was decided by my friends (not me) that it would be held on September 17^th (my birthday) or the nearest Saturday to the 17^th Sept.

The reason why? The World didn’t have one! As simple as that!! Yes we have an Alzheimer awareness week, yes we have a world Alzheimer’s month! But what we DIDN'T have was a WORLD DEMENTIA AWARENESS DAY!! There are so many people with different types of Dementia and not just Alzheimer’s, that thousands, if not millions felt left out and alone!! This had to change!! And change it we did!!

A fantastic global reaction to DAD

Within months, enquiries were not only coming in from all over the UK but from all over the world and before we knew it, it had become global!! We knew then, it was something that was so much needed and only happy to try and accommodate. Slowly but surely over the next two years, word spread and now this year we will be holding events in countries ALL over the world. Never before has the word Dementia been so openly spoken about!! Never before has it been so much in the public eye, and it’s up to us to keep it that way!!

Organise an event on 21st September!

But we MUST apply this to ALL types of Dementia and not just Alzheimer’s!! So please, hold an event this year, and if you are in the UK, this year’s chosen charity is Alzheimer’s research UK. Below is our JustGiving link, look how much we have collected so far on here!!
